Alpha Centauri, March 2169 O.E.
Mission Briefing
SFC Konstantin:

Hello, and Welcome to Zoloto-Gold Colony. On behalf of the University, I would like to thank you for applying for this expedition. My name is Sergeant First-Class Konstantin, and I'm the Alpha Rover Squadron Team Leader. Several months ago, The Zoloto-Gold hydrofoil squadron discovered another continent, located approximately 1,300 Kilometers from here to the Northwest across the oceans of Planet. In addition a Unity supply pod beacon was also discovered inland on the new continent. A continent we subsequently named Tschaikovsky.

Shortly thereafter, orders were issued from democratic council headquarters at University Base, and a colonization pod with 125 settlers, as well as Alpha Rover Squadron has been directed to embark with the Zoloto-Gold hydrofoil squadron in four days for Tschaikovsky. It is the desire of the democratic council that we investigate and recover the Unity supply pod for the University, as well as providing security for the new Tschaikovsky colony base we intend to establish there.

As you well know, our relations with the alien species known as the Usurpers is unstable, and continued forays of Usurper units and groups into University territory has prompted University council officials to post pickets along the entire border with this alien nation. This has resulted in minimal manpower being available for our colonization and exploration efforts, so I‘m counting on getting 100% from each and every one of you!

Everyone on the scout team will be issued weapons for this expedition. Please do not discharge those weapons at any time without proper authorization in advance. Last year a firefight broke out on the Usurper frontier that resulted in the deaths of seven University scouts, with many more being wounded before a truce could be put into effect. Our Peace Negotiations Team, with help from the Incident Analysis Team from University Base, determined later that a small University hunting party was responsible for the firefight. By discharging laser rifles without authorization near the frontier, they attracted the attention of a Usurper border patrol. The Usurpers being in the targeted area at the time believed they were under attack, and they responded triggering a firefight that nearly resulted in a Vendetta! Out in the wilderness, we don't know where the frontier is. The care and safety of your fellow University colonists is a primary responsibility. And as a side note, none of the University hunting party survived the incident.

At this time, I'm going to turn this briefing over to Doctor Yuri Padov, chief  scientist, and leading council member on this expedition, He's our own Alpha Rover Squadron doctor, and noted xenobiology scientist as well. All scouts from Alpha Squadron please report to me immediately after this briefing for foil embarkation instructions. Thank you. Dr. Padov...

Dr. Padov:

The University wishes to express its thanks for your efforts and generous spirit, both up until now, and in the forthcoming days, when all that we know will be tested by the Planet we have come to know as home.

For many of you, this will be your first foray outside of University territory, for those of you younger members of the expedition, take heed of what the Unity old-timers tell you, for they have extensive experience with the dangerous conditions, and unique life forms out in the wilderness here on Planet.

I would like to take a few minutes to brief you on some of the unique hazards of the upcoming mission. First off, unlike here in the colonies, the air in the wilderness is not safe to breath without additional supplemental oxygen, and/or respirator equipment. Stay close to your Rover as much as possible, and if you must travel outside of the immediate vicinity of your Rover on foot, be sure to take a buddy, a weapon, a communicator, your respirator, and at least one air tank. This gear will be issued to you prior to departure, and will normally be stowed in the Rover, It's up to you to pick a buddy to travel with. If you breathe the air without a respirator, it is mildly poisonous. If you are outside without protection for more than one hour, report immediately to myself or to my research assistant, Vadya Ilov, for medical treatment. Prolonged exposure to the air of planet could result in sustained injury, incapacitation, or even death. The water is also mildly toxic. Under no circumstances should you drink unfiltered water from Planet. Filtration canteens will also be provided in gear issued to you.

There are a variety of life forms unique to Planet. Most of them are inhospitable at best, and some are outright lethal. Report any grouping, collection, or “boil” of mind worms immediately to your supervisor. Even if they appear passive, mind worm boils have been known to form and overrun a fortified and well-defended encampment within minutes. Here at Zoloto-Gold colony we have sensor networks, and advanced defenses that reduce this threat to a mild nuisance for the most part, but out in the wild, our only protection is, your eyes, your ears, and your comm equipment, so use them!

Stay out of fungi beds, and away from spores of any type. Go around them. If you can't go around them, withdraw and immediately inform Sgt. Konstantin, or myself, of their existence, and the location. Our research indicates at least an animal intelligence in many forms of this unique native life form, and as we have time, we may study them, and gather samples, but our primary mission is to recover the Unity supply pod and to establish Tschaikovsky colony.

We are always on the lookout for alien artifacts, ruins, monoliths, or monuments, from the ancient civilization that once thrived here. If you spot any artifacts, structures, machinery, or buildings that are not University, immediately report this to myself, or Sgt. Konstantin. Under no circumstances approach the buildings, as they may also be Usurper, or Caretaker facilities, or may belong to another Unity faction. Our existing policy has been to secure a perimeter around the site and request an Exobiology team investigate. Exobiology teams are immediately dispatched in the event of a such find, and with Alpha Squadron, we do this by the book!

All of you are granted a forty-eight (48) hour liberty pass, prior to departure, as it will be unlikely that we will see civilization as we know it for some months. Additional briefings will be conducted enroute onboard the foils. Those of you that are scouts, see Sgt. Konstantin as he requested, the remainder of you are free to begin your liberty! Report to Building One-Seventy-Seven (177) on the foil docks in three days. I'll be available there and then, to answer any additional questions you may have regarding this expedition, our goals for the University, our research goals in this colonization effort, and any other medical questions you may have at that time. Thank you. Dismissed!

3x Sandcrawler Rovers, 2x1x1 M, Speed 80 Km/h, open topped 2 man fast recon dune buggies with a 10 hour battery power supply. Attached to the Scout Rover with a towbar unless in use by the scout team. No weaponry, and no sealed environment, but fast!

4 Shallow-Water High-Speed Hydrofoils, Speed: 70 Km/h, Zoloto-Gold Colony, Crew of 36 including 6 captains, 6 sensor ops specialists, 6 communications specialists, 6 laser cannon gunners, and 12 additional sailors.

1 Colony Pod, (300 M long, 100 M high, 100 M wide). This amphibious vehicle with treads travels approximately 20 Kmh overland, but must be towed over the ocean. Crew 152 including a colony commander, a comm team, a medical team, a sensor team, an agricultural team, as well as a logistical team, and additional personnel to setup sensors, colony defenses, electronics, communications, fabrication facilities, quarters, oxygen scrubbers, air circulation systems, water purification systems, and other colony domes. Unarmed.

The Scout team was dispatched with a Scout Rover and three Sandcrawlers (2 man fast scout vehicles) in a foil to escort the Tschaikovsky Colony Pod and 150 or so settlers, approximately 1,100 Km west of the Garland Crater/University area to establish a colony on a newly discovered continent (Tschaikovsky). While the high speed scout foil provided seaborne recon, three additional fleet foils slowly towed the amphibious colony pod over the open seas.

Days 1-9 rainy, relatively uneventful sea crossing, landfall.

Day 10 After searching for, and locating a favorable landing area, Dr. Padov orders the scout team to land with the rovers and begin a recon of the shore to find a suitable location to establish a colony. Preliminary reports indicate minimal xenofungus groundcover and good mineral content in the soil. Sgt. Yemenov mans the laser cannon on the scout rover, Corporal Zhudkov, and Corporal Yergi are dispatched ahead of the scout rover in a sandcrawler rover. Ilya begins filming for the University Media news and archives. SFC Konstantin drives the scout rover and Dr. Padov remains in the Scout Rover in charge of the reconnaisance expedition. A theft of Vodka is reported from one of the hydrofoils shortly after the departure of the scout team.

The Fungal Forest
The Fungal Tower Forest

The team travels inland on shallow hills lightly covered with xenofungus and detects a fungal tower forest extending an unspecified distance to the southwest of the landing area, travelling parallel to the forest and inland to the foothills of a mountain range the team proceeds.

A few hours later the team is stopped after sighting an eight-legged carapace creature in a small xenofungal bed. The two man sandcrawler approaches the alien lifeform and the sandcrawler crew spots a decomposing human body as well. The sandcrawler honks it vehicle horn and the creature startled, charges the sand crawler and is promptly gunned down by the Scout Rover gunner, Sgt. Yemenov, with a single shot from the twin laser cannon mounted on the Scout Rover.

Dr. Padov begins taking samples of the indigenous lifeform to add data to the University archives on planet life, and Vadya films for archive records as well. The decomposing dead human appears to be from an unknown faction the University has had no contact with. The team reports its' find to the University and updates the University data network.

After securing the body by tying the remains to one of the spare landcrawlers being towed by the scout rover the team proceeds to the edge of the fungal forest where the thry attempt to climb one of the fungal towers to gain an extended sight of the area. After spotting nothing (and having one of the team members fall 20 Meters unharmed into a soft xenofungus bed), the Scout Rover conducts an extended sensor sweep of the area picking up the beacon signal of a Unity supply pod.

GURPS: Unity Supply Pod Found

The team makes for the Unity supply pod to find it crash landed, and it is canted at a 30 degree angle into the earth. On the side of the Unity pod is an abandoned Sandcrawler with the doors open. The scout teams approaches, and a sand crawler is dispatched to investigate the abandoned sandcrawler. Two more bodies are discovered.

The team investigates the Unity supply pod and manages to gain access to the pod by tying ropes to the sandcrawlers and securing a line to the only visible airlock hatch entry high up on one end of the supply pod. After much effort, the main cargo doors of the supply pod are opened, and serial numbers are taken off some of the cargo containers. This is cross referenced in the University Unity database, and it is determined the team has located a Unity agricultural deployment pod.

Operations end for the day as nightfall approaches. There is a festive mood in the camp in spite of the mysterious bodies found. The team rotates guard duty and monitors sensors throughout the night in order to avoid surprises. In the morning, Dr. Padov orders the colony pod landed, and heavy equipment deployed from the colony to begin recovery of the supply pod. The University mainland colonies announced it they were under attack from the Usurpers, and that a Vendetta had begun and here the 1st session ended as we ran out of time.
